“...The complete works of Sheikh Saadi are a treasure whose worth cannot truly be measured. If there exists anyone whose hand and tongue are capable of praising him as he deserves, neither mine is equal to the task, nor would I dare enter such a field. Should I speak of his prose or his poetry? Should I praise his wisdom and mysticism, or his ethics and political thought? Should I measure the heights of his intellect, or speak of the states of love he experienced? Should I recall his ghazals or his qasidas? Should I invite the reader into his Gulistan or his Bustan?

It is therefore better not to prolong the discussion and to content myself with this one statement: although I proudly say that the Iranian people have produced many distinguished figures in every field of knowledge, wisdom, literature, and the arts, even if Iran had produced no one besides Saadi, this one man alone would have been enough to make the name of Iran everlasting.

To praise Sheikh Saadi properly would require a language and eloquence like his own. But alas, it is unlikely that the world will ever witness another like him.

Seven hundred years have passed since his time, and not only has no equal to him appeared, but very few have even approached his stature. It is as though he composed the following verse about himself:

The aged father, Heaven, must possess abundant art and power
Before the mother of the world can give birth to another child like you.

«... کلیات شیخ سعدی گنجینه‌ای است که نمی‌توان قدر و قیمت برای آن معین کرد. اگر از دست و زبان کسی برآید که از عهده ستایش او برآید، دست و زبان من نیست و مرا آن جسارت نباشد که قدم به این میدان گذارم. از نثرش بگویم یا از نظمش؟ از حکمت و عرفانش بسرایم یا از اخلاق و سیاستش؟ مراتب عقلی او را بسنجم یا حالات عشقی؟ غزلیاتش را یاد کنم یا قصایدش را؟ به گلستانش دعوت کنم یا به بوستان؟

پس بهتر آن است که سخن را دراز نکنم و به همین کلمه قناعت ورزم که هر چند سرفرازانه می‌گویم که قوم ایرانی در هر رشته از علم و حکمت و ادب و هنرهای دیگر سرزندان نامی بسیار پرورانده و لیکن اگر هم بجز سعدی کسی دیگر نیروورده بود، تنها این یکی برای جاویدان کردن نام ایران بس بود. مداحی از شیخ سعدی را زبان و بیانی مانند زبان و بیان خود او باید، اما هیهات که چشم روزگار دیگر مانند او ببیند.

هفتصد سال از زمان او می‌گذرد و نه تنها مانند او ظهور ننموده بلکه نزدیک به او هم کم کس دیده شده است. گویی این شعر را درباره خود سروده است که:

هنر بسیار بباید پدر پیر فلک را
تا دگر مادر گیتی چو تو فرزند بزاید
