Perhaps the catastrophe that led his regiment into that place, and the sacrifice of so many men and horses, was simply so that what could no longer occur in the realm of life—because it was too late for it to happen—might take place after life, that is, in the realm of death. Lernet-Holenia’s imagination, just like a dream, traverses all boundaries of time and space, stepping onto the Styx so that the dead and the living may sit together at a table without any ceremony, as if all existence possesses a unified being. The claustrophobic quality of this story lies in its concise and dense prose, flowing in an unbroken, unstoppable stream, enriched and intensified by a poetic force that belongs only to a poet whose expressive form is fundamentally lyrical poetry.

شاید فاجعه‌ای که گردانش را به میان آن برد، قربانی‌کردن آن‌همه انسان و اسب، فقط برای این بود که آنچه دیگر در قلمرو زندگی نمی‌توانست اتفاق بیفتد ـ چراکه برای وقوعش خیلی دیر شده بود ـ بعد از زندگی اتفاق بیفتد، یعنی در عالم مرگ. تخیل لرنت ـ هولنیا، درست همچون رویا، تمام مرزهای مکان و زمان را در می‌نوردد، روی استیکس پل می‌زند تا مرده‌ها و زنده‌ها بی‌هیچ آدابی سر یک میز بنشینند، جوری که انگار تمام هستی موجودیتی یکپارچه دارد. ویژگی کلایستی این داستان، نثر موجز و فشرده‌ای که در جریانی پیوسته و توقف ناپذیر پیش می‌رود، با نیرویی شاعرانه تقویت و غنی شده که فقط در اختیار شاعری است که قالب بیانی‌اش اساسا شعر غنایی باشد.
