A poor employee has a taste for wine. But the times are bad, and he lacks the means to satisfy his passion. A dream crosses and haunts one of his nights: from two fountains of abundance wine flows in torrents. The unfortunate man, pursued by his obsession, then considers his fellow human beings in the form of wine bottles. He will end up in the insane asylum, condemned to Vittel water. This is the subject of one of the short stories in this famous collection which also includes L'indifferent, Crossing Paris, Grace, Dermuche, The Pit of Sins, The False Policeman, The Good Painting.

گودال گناه مجموعه‌ای است شامل هفت داستان به قلم مارسل امه که برخی‌شان از برجسته‌ترین و مشهورترین داستان‌های او به شمار می‌روند. امه را معمولا نویسنده‌ای می‌دانند خالق موقعیت‌های نامتعارف آمیخته با طنز و برخی از داستان‌های مجموعه‌ی حاضر نیز از همین قاعده پیروی می‌کنند. اما در گودال گناه با وجوه دیگری از هنر نویسندگی امه هم مواجه می‌شویم، خاصه در داستان نیمه‌بلند «گذر از میان پاریس» که حال‌وهوایش آدمی را به یاد سینمای نوآر فرانسه می‌اندازد و اتفاقا فیلمی هم با بازی ژان گابن براساس آن ساخته شده است.
