In the figurative arts, architecture, in literature, post-modern is commonly spoken of to indicate a style that now distances itself from the dominant ideas of modernity. This, perhaps for the first time, appears as a unitary phenomenon, which not only has a beginning but which is also on the way to an ending. They distance themselves from modernity above all in reference to one of its dominant ideals: that of progress, of critical overcoming, and, in the arts, of avant-garde.
