The Funeral Games is a historical novel by Mary Reno, published in 1981, that deals with the death of Alexander the Great and its aftermath, the gradual collapse of his empire. This is the last book of his Alexander trilogy. After Alexander's death in 323 BC, his only direct heirs were two unborn sons and a naïve half-brother. Every faction that had been simmering for a long time exploded in the power vacuum. Wives, distant relatives, and generals all vied for the loyalty of the increasingly undisciplined Macedonian army. Most of them failed and were killed in the attempt. Because no one had a leader to keep the great empire from collapsing. But Alexander's legend extended to worlds he had only seen in dreams.
