This book is actually one of Heidegger's key works and the lecture he gave in 1929 on the occasion of his appointment as Husserl's successor at the University of Freiburg. Fourteen years later, i.e. in 1943, Heidegger added an afterword and twenty years later - in 1949 - an introduction to this lecture, which can be seen as an indication of his renewed allegiance to the theme of this lecture during twenty years. At the same time, this short lecture covers the theme of existence and time. It also shows Heidegger's first steps in his intellectual revolution.

این کتاب در واقع یکی از آثار کلیدی هایدگر و درس گفتاری است که وی در سال 1929 به مناسبت انتصاب به جانشینی هوسرل در دانشگاه فرایبورگ ایراد کرده است. هایدگر چهارده سال بعد یعنی در سال 1943 یک پسگفتار و بیست سال بعد ــ سال 1949 ــ درآمدی بر این درسگفتار می‌افزاید که این را می‌توان حاکی از بیعت‌های مجدد او با مضمون این درسگفتار طی بیست سال دانست. این درسگفتار کوتاه در عین حال که مضمون هستی و زمان را دربر دارد. از نخستین گام‌های هایدگر در راه چرخش فکری او نیز نشان دارد.
