Only a few months after the 1953 coup d’état, one of the coup’s parliament members embarks on a journey from Baku to Tehran accompanied by a German woman named Marie Louise Bach. This journey marks the beginning of a friendship between a powerful man and a helpless woman who, in search of her missing husband, finds herself in a vast and unfamiliar land — and, by chance, becomes involved with a wealthy Iranian family.
Safar Kardeha (The Travelers) portrays, on one level, the psychological decay of individuals in a coup-stricken society, and on another, reveals the political intrigues and undercurrents that followed the coup — developments that ultimately led to the emergence of the first forms of civil resistance in Iran.

هنوز چند ماه از کودتای 28 مرداد نگذشته است که یکی از نمایندگان مجلس کودتا با زنی آلمانی به نام ماری لوییس باخ از باکو تا تهران هم‌سفر می‌شود. این سفر درآمدی است بر دوستی میان مردی متنفذ و زنی بی‌پناه که به جست‌وجوی شویش در سرزمینی پهناور و غریب برآمده و به‌حسب تصادف به یک خانوادهٔ مرفه ایرانی راه پیدا می‌کند. سفرکرده‌ها از یک سو روایت اضمحلال شخصیتی انسان‌ها در جامعه‌ای کودتازده است و از سوی دیگر از زدوبندها و ماجراهای پس از کودتا نشان دارد که به شکل‌گیری نخستین مقاومت‌ها در جامعهٔ مدنی ایران انجامید.
