The Iraq that Hassan Blasem depicts in his stories is black and full of death, killing and violence. The characters of Hassan Blasem's stories are condemned to suffer poverty, the atmosphere of the stories is suffocating. In many of his stories, even though the atmosphere seems calm and this one is supposed to have a calmer ending, disaster strikes. The disaster that is always lurking in the lives of Iraqis and collapses on them in the blink of an eye. In a TV interview, when the interviewer said that his stories are a bitter account of "magical realism", Hassan Blasem answered that this is the most accurate description of his fictional world and said: "My stories are not magical realism. Realism is a nightmare and horrible illusions. "Realism is acid, it suddenly burns and wounds."
