The main theme concerns the relations between Greeks, Romans, and Iranians in Antiquity, their military and diplomatic contacts as well as the respective images of each other. The first conference constitutes a fervent plea for a universal understanding of ancient history, the second presents the immense variety and heterogeneity of cultural relations between the Mediterranean world and Iran. The third text offers a new approach to the Persian wars and in the fourth, Roman perceptions of the East are compared to those of the Parthians of the West in the Augustan era. Finally, in the last chapter, the author attempts to determine the place of Rum (i.e., Greece, Rome, and Byzantium) in Iranian tradition.

نویسندگان و محققین غربی، به عنوان نویسندگان تاریخ دورة باستان، عادت کرده‌اند که تاریخ روابط ایران قدیم با روم و بیزانس را از دیدگاهی غربی بنگرند. سنت جهانی بر این است که فرهنگ غرب بر پایة فرهنگ یونان قرار دارد و یونان همة دنیا را از این نظر زیر نگین خود گرفته است. نویسنده در کتاب حاضر، با این نظر موافق نیست. وی نخست به تعریف شرق قدیم می‌پردازد و جایگاه آن را در تاریخ باستان تعیین می‌کند، سپس به رابطة فرهنگی ایرانیان و یونانیان اشاره می‌کند و تصویرهای شرق از نگاه رومیان و تصویرهای غرب از نگاه پارتیان را بیان می‌کند. کتاب شامل پنج کنفرانس است که نویسنده آنها را در پاریس ارائه کرده است. برخی از عنوان‌های مطالب کتاب عبارت‌اند از: تاریخ بستان و شرق قدیم یا دفاعیه‌ای برای تاریخی جهانی، ایرانیان و یونانیان؛ جنگ‌های مادها، نقطة عطفی در تاریخ، و یونانیان، رومیان و بیزانسیان در سنت ایرانی.
