The Tenants is a novel written by Bernard Malamud, which was first published in 1971. Henry Lesser, the only tenant in a dilapidated apartment, tries to finish his novel, but his solitude is interrupted when a black writer named Willie Spearmint, who has ambivalent views about Jews, Moves to an apartment. Henry and Willy are each other's artistic rivals and not-so-close neighbors. But the fragile peace between the two faces a serious threat due to the presence of Willy's white fiancée, Irene, and the landlord's decision to evict them both and demolish the building. The Tenants deals with the fragile nature of human life and the human ability to use violence.
