غایت اصلی کیمیاگری، که اساس کار حکمت هرمسی است به ظاهر تبدیل فلزات کم بها به طلای ذی قیمت و دستیابی به اکسیر جاودانگی است. بدین جهت از لفظ ظاهر استفاده شد تا در فصل غایات کیمیاگری مفصل به وجه باطنی طلای کیمیاگران و اکسیر جاودانگی اشاره و معانی و ملکوتی آنان تشریح و تبیین شود. در این میان به امری به نام سنگ احمر نیز برخورد کرده که گویا هر دو غایت را یکجا در اختیار کیمیاگر می گذارد. درباره رابطه کیمیا و هرمس سخن بسیار است به طوریکه اغلب تاریخ نگاران شرق و غرب بالاجماع هرمس تریمجستوس یا مثلث العظمه را حکیمی نیمه افسانه ای و کیمیاگر خوانده اند.
