The author, who holds a doctorate in agricultural economics from Cornell University, examines the World War I period in Iran when famine and a subsequent cholera epidemic resulted in a 40% loss in the nation's population. The food supply was drained by the presence of Russian, British, and Turkish troops who were known to loot foodstuffs and over-pay hoarders for grains.
