The book is dedicated, as Dovlatov wrote, to "lonely Russian women in America, with love, sadness and hope", and it talks about the difficult and anxious days experienced in a foreign country by people who came to it with hope and desire to start a new life. The novel contains a lot of Dovlatov's personal experience because this writer emigrated to the USA in 1978 and knew the milieu of Russian emigration very well.

سرگئی دولاتوف (تولد ۳ سپتامبر ۱۹۴۱ در اوفا – مرگ ۲۴ اوت ۱۹۹۰ در نیویورک) نویسنده، و روزنامه‌نگار اهل روسیه بود. او را به عنوان محبوب‌ترین نویسنده روسی اواخر قرن ۲۰ می‌شناسند.دولاتوف در شهر اوفا، از پدری یهودی و مادری ارمنی به دنیا آمد، جایی که خانواده اش پس از ترک لنین‌گراد در ابتدای جنگ جهانی دوم، در آن ساکن شده بودند. مادرش نورا دولاتوا یک نمونه‌خوان و پدرش دونات مچیک کارگردان تئاتر بود.
