"In addition to the written rules, those of the code and the sentences that interpret it, there is a series of unwritten rules. The latter are respected with much more attention and caution. And among these there is one that more or less says: a lawyer doesn't defend a client by throwing a colleague overboard. It's not done, and that's it. Normally, anyone who violates these rules, in one way or another, pays for it. Or at least someone tries to make them pay." The lawyer Guido Guerrieri must take this risk. There is a man in prison who declares his innocence, convicted in the first degree of drug trafficking. The circumstances are overwhelming and he himself had initially confessed. But there is the possibility that he ended up in a trap orchestrated by the trial lawyer. A damned scam, therefore, that Guerrieri is reluctant to face, and not only because all appearances are against it. The prisoner is not a new face: at the time of the student movement they called him Fabio Raybàn, the fascist thug who was the obsession of Guido's adolescence. There is also an ambiguous personal situation that involves the lawyer: perhaps the end of one love, the very dangerous beginning of another, and in each of these intersections he seems to materialize, the prisoner who desperately proclaims himself innocent.
