Reading a newspaper in a foreign language is a useful and sometimes necessary skill. It can, however, be frustrating for the learner, as the language in newspapers has its own style. This book provides useful insights into the language of newspapers, to equip learners with the skills necessary to read in a non-native language. The book contains language practice exercises and activities for intermediate students, based on extracts from the British Press. There is also a "Study Edition" of this book which contains teaching notes and answer keys and can be used as a teacher's book if required. The extracts are taken from British national newspapers and periodicals and exercises cover comprehension and vocabulary questions, grammar and gap-fill exercises, role-plays, discussions and quizzes and suggestions for written work. Articles are interspersed with a series of matching exercises and cartoons. In all there are 40 units in the book which can be covered in any order, though the texts become progressively more difficult. The book has broader aims than merely to develop "reading skill". It is designed to expand vocabulary, activate language, develop means of expression and promote fluency through its variety of text types and practical activities.
