“Adina” by Sadriddin Ayni is considered the first revolutionary novel in contemporary Tajik literature and is a socially engaged and human-centered work that presents a tragic and realistic portrayal of Central Asian society during a period marked by oppression, poverty, and lack of awareness. The novel tells the story of people whose lives are shaped by hardship and injustice, depicting the suffering of those who become victims of social inequality and deprivation.

At the center of the novel are the struggles and experiences of women and girls who had little independent status in the traditional society of that era and were often treated as commodities to be exchanged among others. “Adina” offers a critical view of the social structures of its time, giving voice to the forgotten and marginalized while portraying the realities of poverty, ignorance, inequality, and human relationships.

Beyond its literary significance, the novel serves as an important source for anthropological and sociological studies of Central Asia, as it presents everyday life, beliefs, and social relations of the people of Vararud (Transoxiana/Mawara’ al-Nahr) during a period of major historical transformation.

Sadriddin Ayni (1878–1954) was one of the most influential Persian-language poets, writers, historians, and linguists of Central Asia. His works played a significant role in the cultural and literary development of Tajikistan and Vararud in the twentieth century. “Adina” remains one of the important examples of Persian-language social literature and a lasting portrayal of the struggles of ordinary people.
