The book Juliette: or The Advantages of Vice (Volumes I–II) is the Swedish translation of the famous novel by the Marquis de Sade. It recounts the story of Juliette, the sister of “Justine,” who—unlike her sister—chooses a path of hedonism and vice, and through a series of provocative episodes reflects the author’s philosophical, social, and anti-moral views. The novel is rich in dark humor, social criticism, and explicit themes, and is regarded as one of the most controversial and significant works of secular philosophical literature of the eighteenth century. The original work was published in French in 1797, and this edition comprises the opening volumes (I–II) of the series.
