The story of Rostam and Sohrab is one of the most tragic and enduring episodes of the Shahnameh: a tale of ignorance, fate, and the tragedy of a father who unknowingly kills his own son.

Rostam, the legendary hero of Iran, spends a night as a guest of the king of Samangan, where he marries the king’s daughter, Tahmineh. The union results in a son, Sohrab, whose existence remains unknown to Rostam. As Sohrab grows into a mighty young warrior, he sets out both to find his father and to defeat the Iranian army, ultimately approaching the borders of Iran.

In the ensuing war between Iran and Turan, Sohrab—unaware of his father’s identity—encounters Rostam on the battlefield. King Kay Kavus, fearful of Sohrab’s strength, prevents any chance of father and son recognizing each other. Rostam and Sohrab fight several times, and in their final clash, Rostam deals a fatal blow to Sohrab. As he lies dying, Sohrab reveals his mother’s token and names his father, and Rostam realizes that the brave young warrior he has slain is his own son.

The story ends with Rostam’s overwhelming grief—a tragedy regarded as one of the most poignant moments in the Shahnameh and in world epic literature.
This new edition of The tale of Rostam and Sohrab, illustrated by Mohammad-Ali Keshavarz and rewritten by Maziar Baghlani and Eilnaz Ebrahimi, is published by Barf Publishing for young readers.
