Sa‘di of Shiraz, known as the master and king of eloquence and honored as the Sheikh-e Ajall, has in the paradisiacal garden of Persian poetry a Bustan whose fragrant blossoms intoxicate every devoted and passionate soul. This gardener of Persian letters has pruned each branch of eloquent speech with the precision of a consummate poet, presenting a majestic didactic poem in ten chapters comprising more than four thousand verses—each like a unique, colorful flower.

Bustan-e Sa‘di is composed in the meter of motaqāreb, and for this reason—sharing its meter with Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh—the two masterpieces are often compared. The influence of Ferdowsi and his epic is clearly visible throughout Bustan.

The origins of the Bustan lie in Sa‘di’s extensive travels and wanderings. After praising God, the Prophet of Islam, several eminent figures, and explaining his reasons for versifying the work, Sa‘di begins the ten chapters. Nearly all Sa‘di scholars regard the Bustan as Sa‘di’s ideal city, in which he reflects on themes such as justice, wisdom and contemplation, benevolence, love and ecstasy, humility, contentment and acceptance, moderation, education, gratitude, and repentance. With illustrative anecdotes and refined observations, the master of speech expresses his views on each subject. The language of the poem is clear and accessible, yet filled with subtleties and treasures for those well-versed in literature.

Among the various editions of Bustan, the edition prepared by Gholamhossein Yusofi, published with the scholarly support of the Association of Professors of Persian Language and Literature, is regarded as the most authoritative and reliable. In addition to Yusofi’s insightful commentary on Sa‘di and his explanations of difficult words, this edition provides a careful account of textual variants, making it the most accurate version of this timeless masterpiece available today.
