Do Not Shoot the Kites is a young adult novel by Turkish writer Feride Çiçekoğlu, which, in a simple language and from a child’s point of view, explores profound human themes such as freedom, justice, and humanity.

The story centers on Barış, a young boy who has grown up in a women’s prison because his mother is incarcerated and he has no one outside the prison. Over the years, he has become accustomed to prison life and forms a deep emotional bond with one of the inmates, İnci. When İnci is released, Barış, unable to cope with the separation, begins writing her one-sided letters describing life in prison and the condition of the inmates—letters that never reach their recipient.

This novel is Çiçekoğlu’s first work, published in 1986, and a successful film adaptation was released the following year. The Persian translation was done by Farhad Sakha in 1991, and in 1994 it received the IBBY Award for Best Translation of Young Adult Fiction. Sakha has also played a significant role in introducing contemporary Turkish literature to Persian-speaking readers.
