“Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead” is a philosophical crime novel by Olga Tokarczuk, one of Poland’s most acclaimed contemporary writers and the winner of the 2018 Nobel Prize in Literature. Originally published in Polish in 2009, the novel was shortlisted for the 2019 International Booker Prize.

The story follows Janina Duszejko, an elderly woman living alone in a remote village near the Czech border in the Silesia region of Poland. As more hunters and members of the local community die in strange circumstances, her unusual theory draws the attention of the police, who dismiss her ideas and question her unconventional worldview.

Blending elements of mystery, ecological fiction, philosophical reflection, and social criticism, the novel explores humanity’s relationship with nature, the ethics of violence, and the boundaries between justice and revenge. Through Janina’s eccentric yet insightful perspective, Tokarczuk challenges traditional ideas about power, morality, and the value placed on human and non-human life.
