The novel “We Are Drunk and Wrecked, and No One Is Witnessing Us” is the debut novel by Mehdi Ganjavi, a fiction writer, literary researcher, and professor at the University of Toronto, published by Asemana. This work is a social thriller that unfolds between the past and present of a group of characters who, in Iran during the 2000s and the years preceding them, confront personal, hidden, and sometimes forgotten experiences. In the novel, each character carries a history of their own, and events and places are gradually revealed through the narratives of marginalized and excluded individuals, while a shared trace, described as a “thin stream of blood,” connects their stories.

Beyond fiction writing, Mehdi Ganjavi is active in literary research and the study of modern Iranian literary history. He is the author of the Bijan Elahi entry for Encyclopaedia Iranica, and his articles have appeared in publications such as Iranian Studies and Middle East Studies. Ganjavi has also worked on editing and reviving post-Constitutional Revolution Persian literary texts, preparing and publishing works by writers such as Abdolhossein Sanati-Zadeh Kermani and Kazem Mosta‘an al-Soltan. Among his other scholarly projects is the recording and editing of “Tarjome-ye Honariyeh” by Mohammad-Baqer Khorasani Bezanjardi, one of the earliest Persian translations of One Thousand and One Nights.

Ganjavi previously published the short story collection “Paranoia Training” in 2012, and his flash fiction collection “Waiting for Sleep from an Irrational Man” was published by Asemana in Toronto in 2021. The novel “We Are Drunk and Wrecked, and No One Is Witnessing Us” continues his literary exploration of the connections between fiction, social history, and the hidden experiences of human life.
