The book "Tārikh-e Shānjmān-hā-ye Irān" by Mirza Aqa Khan Kermani, a pioneer of modern historiography and promoter of nationalist ideas in Iran, was written in the final years of the author’s life and reflects his latest perspectives on Iranian history, politics, and ethics. The term “Shānjmān” means transformation or change. In this work, Kermani employs medical and neurological metaphors to analyze the impact of rulers and governmental structures on the character and ethics of the people, showing how racial mixing and governmental policies led to the corruption of parts of Iranian society.

The book blends traditional and modern viewpoints: the relationship between character and the body draws on traditional medicine and the metaphor of temperament, while insights from contemporary neuroscience and anatomy are incorporated. Inspired by religious narratives, myths, and nineteenth-century European racial thought, Kermani examines the history and decay of the Iranian nation and studies the influence of different dynasties—from the Umayyads and Abbasids to the Mongols—on the behavior and disposition of the populace.

This edition, edited by M.
