For many, the death of socialism, both in reality and in imagination, has meant the final death of Marxism. Nevertheless, Marxism still provides both the most comprehensive critique of capitalism and a compelling guide to possible alternatives. The survival of capitalism guarantees the survival of Marxism. Therefore, each period forms its own Marxism and expands this tradition in such a way that it solves the issues of the day. In this essay, I outline a type of sociological Marxism that emerges from the unexplored and unexpected convergence of the writings of Karl Polanyi and Antonio Gramsci in the middle of the 20th century. Gramsci's and Polanyi's writings are often dissected like dead carcasses: the most useful parts are removed from the shell of meaning and linked to causal theories. I intend to revive these two sets of theories in their entirety and link them together.
