جورج هربرت مید متولد ۱۸۶۳ از یک خانواده مسیحی در آمریکا بود. وی پس از اتمام دوره اولیه تحصیل دچار تحولات فکری در باب مسیحیت گشت و پس از اتمام کالج به عنوان معلم در مدارس ابتدایی مشغول به فعالیت شد. در نهایت در مقطع فوق لیسانس در رشته فلسفه به دانشگاه هاروارد راه یافت. امروزه مید را به عنوان فیلسوف، جامعه‌شناس و روان‌شناس آمریکایی می‌شناسند که از بنیان‌گذاران روان‌شناسی اجتماعی و یکی از چهره‌های برجسته مکتب جامعه‌شناسی شیکاگو است. در نهایت وی در سال 1931 در سن 68 سالگی درگذشت.
