Lev Gumilev is the famous Russian historian and the academician of Russian natural science and founder of modern ethnology and son of two famous poets in the early of 20th century. He was also a poet and known Farsi and had knowledge of Dari literature and culture. He had also translated some contemporary Iranian poems. This book, which is the result of a group working by Gumilev leading, went to the Volga delta to find out about Caspians because it was not obvious whom were they, where they came from and what was their culture or even where they were living.

لف گوميليوف تاريخ دان برجسته ي شوروي و روسيه و عضو فرهنگستان علوم طبيعي روسيه و پايه گذار دانش جديد قوم شناسي و فرزند دو شاعر نامدار آغاز سده ي بيستم بود. خود نيز شاعري بود با استعداد و فارسي دان و آشنا با ادب و فرهنگ دري. ترجمه ي چندين مجموعه از شعر شاعران معاصر ايران جزو كارنامه ي ادبي اوست. او با رهبري هيئتي عازم دلتاي ولگا و حوزه ي رود ترك بود تا برابر نشاني هايي كه در منابع بود رد حضور خزران را بيابد. چون مشخص نبود كه آنها كه بودند و از كجا آمده بودند و شيوه ي زندگي شان چه بوده و يا حتي كجا زندگي مي كرده اند.
