Oliver Twist has all the elements of a modern novel except one: self-awareness. The world is completely incomprehensible and unrecognizable to Oliver. The chaos and commotion of the outside world are a mirror of his inner confusion. The signs of Dickens's genius are evident in the creation of story space and theme, and the creation of dynamic and permanent characters and stylistic innovations. The genius and creativity of Dickens are shown more than anything else in the creation of living and lasting characters. All the readers are surprised by the vitality and naturalness of the characters. No other writer in the art can match Dickens in portraying people at first glance.

آلیور تویست همه‌ی عناصر رمانی مدرن را دارد جز یکی: خودآگاهی. جهان برای آلیور یکسره نامفهوم و ناشناختنی است. آشفتگی و هیاهو و آشوب دنیای بیرون آینه‌ی سردرگمی درونی اوست. نشانه‌های نبوغ دیکنز در آفرینش فضای داستانی و درون‌مایه و خلق شخصیت‌های پویا و ماندنی و نوآوری‌های سبکی آشکار است. نبوغ و خلاقیت دیکنز بیش از هر چیز در خلق شخصیت‌های زنده و ماندگار نمایان می‌شود. همه‌ی خواننده‌ها از سرزندگی و طبیعی بودن شخصیت‌ها در شگفت می‌مانند. هیچ نویسنده‌ای در هنر به تصویرکشیدن انسان‌‌ها در همان نگاه اول به پای دیکنز نمی‌رسد. این رمان با زبانی طنز‌آمیز و گزنده روایت می‌شود که خاص دیکنز است و در زبان انگلیسی نظیر ندارد. از آلیور تویست نمایش‌‌های متعدد و چند فیلم و مجموعه‌ی تلویزیونی ساخته شده است اما لذت تماشای هیچ‌یک از این‌ها با لذت خواندن آن برابری نمی‌کند.
