Karl Showerk stands in the shadow of his dominant, strict, relentless father, who is an extremely successful officer of the KuK monarchy shortly before the start of the First World War and has a brilliant career. Due to pressure from his father, Karl also pursues a military career, although he is rather shy and reserved and is interested in music.
