About the Author
Shahzoda Samarqandi (Nazarova) was born in 1975 in Samarkand, a Tajik-speaking city in Uzbekistan. After living for some time in Britain, she migrated to the Netherlands in 2006 and has lived there since. Protessionally, she has worked as a journalist and a radio and TV producer.
Her writings often address topics such as identity, migration, gender and women's issues, and the life of minorities in Central Asia. "Her focus on women's issues and gender has faced extensive criticism... because she tries to be the unheard voice of her people." One of her published novels entitled Stockholm Syndrome has been described as "one of the most controversial books to emerge from the Tajik community."
Shahzoda's works are known for linking languages and cultures:
Tajik/Persian literature, the identity of Central Asian minorities, and the experience of living in exile. She is part of a new generation of writers from the former Soviet republics who challenge taboos and address social issues that are usually less discussed in their origin societies.
Her works such as Stockholm Syndrome, Motherlands, and Rigestan have been translated into Russian, English and Arabic, and she has also published a novel in English called Return to Bukhara.
The Patience of Stone and The Rebellion of the Soul are two collections of her poems before her migration, and In the Shadow of the Journey is a collection of her poems during her migration, published in 2003.
