Luc Ferry propounds the thought that modernity and presence of secular humanism in Europe in 18th century, doesn't dispel request for meaning, holy affair or even God's belief, but has changed them through two processes: man made a devine affair and God made a humane affair. Ferry sees evidences of the first process in efforts of Christian society to confront with decision-making and interpret of religious tradition to modern language. He sees sign of the second process in birth of love and modern omanism, which both require anxious for others and sacrifice of essence in defense of values.

لوك فری در اين كتاب به طرح اين انديشه مي پردازد كه مدرنيته و ظهور اومانيسم سكولار در اروپا از قرن هجدهم، طلب معنا و امر مقدس يا حتي ايده ی خدا را از ميان نبرده، بلكه از راه دو فرايند آن ها را دگرگون ساخته است: انساني سازی امر الهي و الهي سازی امر انساني. فری شواهد فرايند اول را در تلاش های جامعه ی مسيحي برای مقابله با جزم انديشي و برگرداندن سنت ديني به زبان امروز مي بيند. رد و نشان فرايند دوم را نيز در زايش عشق و انسان دوستي مدرن مي جويد كه هر دو دلواپسي برای ديگران و حتي ايثار نفس در راه دفاع از ارزش ها را اقتضا مي كنند.
