Hisham Jait, a historian of contemporary Muslim thought, based on sociology, philosophy, and historical geography and influenced by the likes of Hegel, Merleau-Ponty, and Iqbal Lahori, has organized the modernization of thought and in the historical and comparative study of religions and religious narratives, the historicity of religion in "worldly time" prove. With this approach and believing in the finality of Islam, Hisham believes that modernizing the Khatam religion, which lies in its historical essence, is an obligatory act for the modern development of the Muslim society and state. This necessary action is only possible by removing the dominance of history from religious thought and naturally creating a balance between "Islamic identity" and "globalization".

هشام جعیط مورخ‌ نواندیش معاصر مسلمان با تکیه بر جامعه‌شناسی، فلسفه و جغرافیای تاریخی و تحت تأثیر امثال هگل، مرلوپونتی و اقبال لاهوری، نوسازی اندیشه را سامان داده و در بررسی تاریخی و تطبیقی ادیان و روایت‌های دینی، تاریخمندی دین را در «زمان دنیوی» اثبات می‌کند. هشام با این رویکرد و با باور به خاتمیت اسلام معتقد است عصرانی شدن دین خاتم که در ذات تاریخیت آن نهفته، توسعۀ مدرن جامعه و دولت مسلمان را عملی واجب می‌داند. این کنش ضروری جز با حذف سلطۀ تاریخ از اندیشۀ دینی و طبعا ایجاد تعادل میان «هویت اسلامی» و «جهانی شدن» ممکن نیست.
