The history of the two religions, Islam and Christianity, shows that the expectation of the promised future has always played a role in justifying faith and a number of religious beliefs, and in difficult historical circumstances, it has kept hope alive in the hearts of believers and has prevented their social cohesion from being jeopardized. However, a historical study of these two religions shows that this doctrine, especially when combined with a number of malicious and mental distortions of believers, has led to the formation of many religious sects and movements in Christianity and Islam. Among these deviant sects in Islam are the Sheikhiya, Babism, and Baha'i sects, and in Christianity, Adventists, Mormons, and Jehovah's Witnesses.

تاریخ دو دین اسلام و مسیحیت نشان می‌دهد که انتظار موعود همواره در موجه‌سازی ایمان و شماری از باورهای دینی نقش ایفا کرده است و در شرایط دشوار تاریخی امید را در دل دینداران زنده نگه داشته و سبب شده تا انسجام اجتماعی‌شان به مخاطره نیفتد. با این حال بررسی تاریخی این دو دین نشان می‌دهد که این آموزه بویژه وقتی با شماری از بداندیشی و کژتابی‌های ذهنی دینداران گره می‌خورد، سبب شده تا فرقه ها و جریان‌های دینی زیادی در مسیحیت و اسلام شکل بگیرد. از جمله این فرقه‌های انحرافی در اسلام می‌توان فرقه‌های شیخیه، بابیت و بهائیت و در مسیحیت، ادونتیست‌ها مورمون‌ها و شاهدان یهوه را نام برد.
