Despite all the research that has been done so far on the life and works of Abu Hamid al-Ghazali, there are still many uncertainties about his life and thoughts. This is not only due to the darkness that has cast a shadow over the history of his era, the history of the Seljuk era, but also to a large extent due to the diversity and dispersion of his works, some of which are still only in manuscript form, some do not have accurate critical editions, some have been mentioned under different titles, and some have been composed by others in his name, or their authenticity is in doubt.

با این همه تحقیق که تا کنون در احوال و آثار ابوحامد غزالی انجام یافته است هنوز درباره زندگی و اندیشه او موارد ابهام کم نیست. این نکته نه فقط ناشی از تاریکیهایی است که بر تاریخ عصر او، تاریخ عصر سلاجقه سایه افکنده است بلکه تا حد زیادی نیز ناشی از تنوع و پراکندگی آثار اوست که بعضی از آنها هنوز فقط به صورت نسخه های خطی است، برخی چاپ دقیق انتقادی ندارد، پاره‌یی با عنوانهای مختلف دیگر نیز یاد شده است و تعدادی را دیگران به نام او برساخته اند یا بهرحال اصالت آنها محل تردیدست.
