Benoni is the first part of a diptych, which has a special place among Knut Hamsun's works. This novel is very much Norway, Nordland's unique nature, forests, fauna and flora, sea, bright summer nights, heavy winter days... And just like a reflection of this nature, there are people: Their prejudices, their shyness, their low-voiced sentences, their limitations, desires, and dreams. For the first time, Knut Hamsun centers in this book on one of the biggest concerns of all his works, and one of the most important problems of Scandinavian society: the conflict between traditional rural culture with its ethical and typical values and the urban world, capitalism and money. In the second place, there is a melancholic love story, a story crowned with Behçet Necatigil's poetic translation...
“Hamsun, this great novelist was born in Norway in 1859. He traveled, lived, loved, wrote. Translating Hamsun is like writing poetry for me.”
- Behçet NECATİGİL
“Among the writers of our time, I do not see anyone who could surpass Hamsun in terms of original creativity. Its style and appearance are far from magnificence and ornamentation. Beauty is hidden in its simplicity... He philosophizes while telling. But it is futile to try to predict what he will say in advance... He does not put forward a moral dogma or a social hypothesis. His thoughts are as free as an ideal.”
- Maxim GORKY
“He may suddenly fall into a cliff, die in a fight, drown in a secluded fjord away from people, or collapse at a locksmith's table. But he left this world while watching the reindeer silently and calmly in the forests... No, my heart cannot accept this ending for Hamsun.”
- Hermann HESSE
