در اين داستان همانند ديگر آثار كريستيان بوبن اغلب از عشق سخن مي رود؛ عشقي كه خصيصه ي آدمي و گوهر پاك او بوده، اما چون پا نگيرد آغاز فرسودگي و ميراندن مي شود. ساختار كتاب شامل تكه هايي از نوشته هاي به ظاهر پراكنده است كه در اصل به يكديگر مربوط هستند. مضامين اصلي اين نوشته ها عبارتند از عشق كودكي و تنهايي.
