A mutilated man struggling with his wife's perversions, a "human chair" lavishing caresses and cold sweats on its victims, criminal confessions in a "red room", a Machiavellian plot around a "piece of two meanings" ... We will find in these five stories the same atmosphere and the same taste for fantastic and obsessive staging as in The Prey and the Shadow: an implacable logic that makes crime an aesthetic path, where sexual perversions, refined cruelty, mental manias, and delusions intermingle. "Strolling along the Edo River" is the literal translation of the ideograms used to compose this name of Edogawa Ranpo (anagram of Edgar Allan Poe), better known in Japan as the founding master of Japanese detective literature.
