"It was in 1938 that the series of studies began that reconstituted large fragments of the ideology, theology, and mythology common to the Indo-Europeans before their migrations. The first ten years were devoted to the summary exploration of two sets: the conception of the three hierarchical functions of sacred sovereignty, force, and fertility; and the conception of the two complementary aspects, magical and legal, of sovereignty. Various works [...], books now out of print, have given shape to the first observations. But subsequent research, based on these sketches, has made it possible in turn to clarify, correct, complete, and coordinate them. It was, therefore, necessary to take up this principle theologica again, taking into account nearly thirty years of progress and also almost uninterrupted discussions that have brought them to the attention of "separate philologies". The presentation focused on the fundamental questions and was limited to the four main witnesses who served, by comparison, to reach a prehistoric, Indo-European reality, namely Vedic India, Iran, Rome, and Scandinavia: the extensions that the Greeks and Celts then provided were left aside.
