کتاب سنتائور، رمانی نوشته ی جان آپدایک است که اولین بار در سال 1963 منتشر شد. داستان این رمان، روایتی مدرن از افسانه ی شیرون است. شیرون، نجیب ترین و خردمندترینِ سنتائورها (موجوداتی با بدن انسان و پاهای اسب) بود. او در حالی که به شکلی دردناک زخمی شده بود، جاودانگی خود را به پرومتئوس تقدیم کرد. در این کتاب، کوه المپ به دبیرستانی در شهری کوچک تبدیل شده است. شیرون در این قصه، معلم علوم این دبیرستان یعنی جورج کالدول و پرومتئوس نیز، پسر پانزده ساله ی کالدول یعنی پیتر است. آپدایک با ترکیب هنرمندانه ی خاطراتی از گذشته ی خود و قصه هایی از اساطیر یونان، جست و جوی شیرون برای رسیدن به آرامش را به اتفاقات رقم خورده در سه روز زمستانی در سال 1947 تبدیل می کند. نتیجه ی این ترکیب، داستانی درخشان و به یاد ماندنی است که جذابیت خود را از ابتدا تا انتها حفظ می کند.
