The collection consists of 20 short stories, one of which is called "The King Listens": the narrator paints the face of a king whose most important job since his coronation is to sit motionless on the throne. In the palace, there is a vibrating sound from time to time, the narrator tells that maybe the palace is full of enemies, and perhaps it has become more difficult to distinguish a friend from an enemy. The city is moving like an ocean, but everything is quiet and peaceful in the palace, and maybe this order of the palace indicates a coup. The danger is mostly caused by silence, But the narrator reassures the king that all this is due to his imagination. The king's palace is built on the crypts where someone was buried alive. There is a sound, the sound can indicate the movement of a human being outside, enemies are attacking the palace, and the king encounters a prisoner while escaping. He eventually escapes outside the palace and breathes a sigh of relief.
