Bertolt Brecht lived in one of the brilliant and at the same time decadent periods in Germany and tried to choose a path that would save both his life and the fate of the theater. Surprisingly, saving his personal life turned out to be much more difficult than saving the fate of the theater. This book is the first step to getting to know the life of a fun-loving young man who became a full-fledged revolutionary, exiled to escape from Nazism, and fled America suffering from Cold War fever and its Hollywood cinema to finally die in East Germany under Stalinist censorship. Saving the theater seemed easier: it was enough for Brecht to distance himself from false sentimentality and fake moralism to become a lasting name in the field of theater by creating numerous amazing works.

برتولت برشت در یکی از ادوار درخشان و درعین‌حال منحطّ آلمان زندگی کرد و تلاش نمود در این میان مسیری را برگزیند که هم زندگی خود و هم سرنوشت تئاتر را نجات دهد. تعجب‌آور آنکه نهایتا نجات زندگی شخصی‌اش کاری بس دشوارتر از نجات سرنوشت تئاتر از آب در آمد. کتاب حاضر قدم اوّلی است برای آشنایی با زندگی جوانی خوشگذران که به یک انقلابی تمام‌عیار تبدیل شد، برای فرار از نازیسم جلای وطن کرد و از آمریکای دچار تب جنگ سرد و سینمای هالیوودی‌اش گریخت تا نهایتا در آلمان شرقی و تحت سانسور استالینی چشم از جهان فروبندد. نجات تئاتر به نظر آسان‌تر بود: برای برشت کافی بود تا از احساس‌گرایی دروغین و اخلاق‌گرایی جعلی فاصله بگیرد تا با خلق آثار پرشمار و شگفت‌انگیز، به نامی ماندگار در حوزهٔ تئاتر تبدیل شود.
