Contemporary anthropologist David Graeber (1961-2020) presents the history of the origin and evolution of money in the book Debt. He criticizes the common understanding of the history and nature of money and draws a new picture of this familiar phenomenon; An image that is mixed with the story of the evolution of the global economy. In this way, the book also opens a new window to the understanding of capitalism and shows that the conceptual origins of capitalism are in places that we often do not expect. The book begins with a description of an ethical confusion related to the understanding and judgment of debt, and this confusion is the tangled tangle that this entire text is written to untangle. In this way, in examining the evolution of the form of debt and money, Graeber explores the origins of our moral concepts throughout history and across geography. The book with this historical and geographical scope, which covers five thousand years of human history, is full of original thoughts and fascinating observations, but giving this new and fascinating description is not all that Graeber wants to do. The purpose of this meandering narrative is to finally think about how a better world is possible.
