The collection of the artist's dog's face in his youth was first published on April 4, 1940. But the point that seemed to be the most sensitive among all was the choice of the title of the book, which was similar to James Joyce's book The Face of the Artist in His Youth... The many similarities of this work in the subject, theme, structure, and type of narratives with Joyce's other work, the Dubliners, were undeniable. In addition, Thomas' constant references throughout the book to animals or humans with either one eye or one eye covered by a hat or a tuft of hair reinforce the reader's sense that he has deliberately used these elements to satirize Joyce. The other side of the coin of this collection of stories is its biographical context, which gives it an autobiographical mood and brings the story closer to the border of the unknown.
