“Atash-e Pārsi (The Persian Fire)” is a historical and literary study of the life, thought, and era of Sa‘di Shirazi, compiled in two volumes. The work aims to provide a comprehensive portrait of Sa‘di’s personality, writings, and the historical circumstances of the time in which Sheikh-e Ajal (the Master of the Age) lived. The first volume includes the opening two sections of the book and focuses on the historical background and life of Sa‘di.

The first section examines the political and social landscape of Iran and Shiraz during Sa‘di’s lifetime, discussing subjects such as local governments, the situation of Iran under the Khwarazmian dynasty, the Crusades, the Mongol invasion, and its consequences. This section seeks to reconstruct the historical and social environment in which Sa‘di was raised and lived.

The second section is devoted to Sa‘di’s life from childhood to his final years, his extensive travels, his intellectual and ethical characteristics, and his relationships with the rulers of his time. Drawing on Sa‘di’s works, especially his Kulliyyāt, and comparing them with historical accounts and available sources, the author presents a portrait of the poet’s intellectual world and lived experiences.

“Atash-e Pārsi” portrays Sa‘di as a poet who lived during one of the most turbulent periods in Iranian history, an era marked by insecurity, warfare, and profound social change. From this perspective, Sa‘di’s works reflect human experiences, historical suffering, and the search for moderation, wisdom, and hope in the face of hardship.

Hamid Yazdanparast (born in 1965) is an Iranian writer and historian whose works focus on Iranian history, culture, and literature. “Atash-e Pārsi” is among his scholarly works devoted to one of the most important figures in Persian literature.
