شرّدتهم بلادهم سوريا فاجتمعوا في إسطنبول. جاءوا من العاصمة دمشق ومحيطها، تتضارب على ألسنتهم آراءٌ متباينة وفي قلوبهم مآسي شتى، منها ما يتّصل بفقدان بعض الأهل والأحبة، أو جميع الأهل والأحبة، وأشياء أخرى كثيرة يستعصي حصرها وتعريفها، مجملها الوطن.
في المقهى ينعقد اجتماعهم اليومي الذي تحضره الحرب التي لها عندهم أسماء مختلفة. والخلاف على الاسم يستدعي شجاراً حول الأسباب. يقول بعضهم أشعلنا شمعة في ليل الاستبداد الطويل فأبى النظام إلا أن يجعلها ناراً تأكل الأخضر واليابس، وكان اليابس أكثر من الأخضر؛ حياتنا كلّها كانت يابسة. يدمدم البعض الآخر منهم كنا عايشين، وربّما أضاف أنتم افتريتم علينا.
هكذا تمضي أيامهم، يختلط فيها الخاصّ من أمورهم بالعامّ منها، وتتداخل المشاعر الإنسانية الرقيقة بالهموم والخوف وقسوة الواقع. يشدّ بعضهم الحنين والأمل بالعودة إلى وطن يحترق؛ يريدونه وإن لم يبق منه سوى الرماد. أما البعض الآخر منهم فيريد التوغّل في البُعد غرباً وشمالاً فراراً من وطن لا يرونه سوى مقبرة أو محرقة.
يتناوب كلّ من عارف، وأمير، وندى، ومنى، على سرد حكايته الخاصة التي تندرج ضمن الإطار الكلي للرواية. وقد أتقن المؤلف تشييد البنية الروائية وأجاد في رسم الشخصيات وتلوينها فبدت حيّة تتحرك وتتفاعل ضمن سياق سردي سلس ومتدفق.
