The Persian Empire dominated the Near East and the Eastern Mediterranean during the reign of the Achaemenid kings for almost two hundred years. It was the largest Persian empire the world had ever seen. Some historians believe that Cyrus the Achaemenid created some distinctive features in the Achaemenid army and administrative organization. But it is not clear to what extent these were truly his work. The sources of Achaemenid military history are heterogeneous. Given that few Iranians were involved in historiography, the author relies on Greek historians in this book for a coherent narrative. The first and greatest of these historians is Herodotus, who described the establishment of the Achaemenid Empire as a background for his main story, The Great Battles of Persia and Greece. The book The Achaemenid Iranian Army examines the military organization of this empire, its command, the military training of the Persians, the Guards units, the soldiers of the provinces, and the organization of the units. The following chapters, examine the Persian and Median costumes, the Iranian and foreign soldiers, and the army's preparation.
