The art of actor-network theory, of which Latour is one of the main authors, is to establish a very general symmetry between humans and non-humans; Non-humans are not mere tools in the hands of humans, nor silent and hidden objects, waiting for a subject (knowledge) to discover them one day. They have their own life, history, agency, action and influence. The goal of actor-network theory is to give or restore the dignity of agency and historicity to objects. They are not passive objects in the hands of man, but the side of human negotiation. They are partners in making our socio-political history. They are true citizens of society. Most of the history of thought is the history of expropriating the agency of non-humans for the benefit of humans; In the words of Latour: "Non-humans are born free, but they are always locked!"

هنر نظریه‌ی کنشگرـ‌شبکه، که لاتور از مؤلفان اصلی آن است، برقراری تقارن بسیار عام میان انسان‌ها و غیرانسان‌ها است؛ غیرانسان‌ها نه وسایلی صرف در دست انسان‌اند و نه ابژه‌های خاموش و پنهانی، که منتظر باشند روزی سوژه‌ای (دانشمندی) آن‌ها را کشف کند. آن‌ها زندگی، تاریخ، عاملیت، کنش و اثرگذاریِ خاص خود را دارند. هدف نظریه‌ی کنشگرـ‌شبکه اعطا یا بازگرداندن شأن عاملیت و تاریخ‌مندی به اشیاست. آن‌ها نه ابژه‌های منفعل در دست انسان بلکه طرف مذاکره‌ی انسان‌اند. آن‌ها در ساختن تاریخ اجتماعی‌ـ‌سیاسی ما شریک‌اند. آن‌ها شهروندان راستین جامعه‌اند. عمده‌ی تاریخ اندیشه، تاریخ مصادره‌ی عاملیت غیرانسان‌ها به نفع انسان‌هاست؛ به قول لاتور: «غیرانسان‌ها آزاد به دنیا می‌آیند ولی همواره دربندند!»
