Polka, a dachshund dog born in 1966, struck François Nourissier's life with a real emotional illness. Hence the unanswered letter he addresses to his evil little companion in a chestnut dress. Occupying his days and nights, Polka forces his master into absolute love, withdrawal into himself, silence and above all a more than critical view now cast on the outside world, considered frivolous and boring. The writer continues his meditation - on literary creation, his encounters, current events - starting with the little dog, who plays the surprising role of a confidante, or a four-legged psychoanalyst towards him. A little less than a year after the publication of this book, Polka died, one December evening, in the arms of her companion.

دوست داشتم این کتاب کوچک را چنین بنامم: ”جای دل!“ اگر این عنوان را انتخاب می‌کردم آنگاه شاید می‌توانستم به تأمّل دربارۀ این موضوع بپردازم که چگونه در قلب هر یک از ما آدم‌ها، در دوران خاصی از زندگی، جایی برای محبت و عطوفت خالی می‌ماند و ممکن است به هر کسی‌که قلب و روحمان را تسخیر کند تعلّق گیرد. بعد از خود پرسیدم که این موضوع دربارۀ تو چقدر صدق می‌کند. بعد صادقانه به خودم پاسخ دادم: چنین فرضی به جایی نمی‌رسد. فقط آدم‌های دغلکار ممکن است ادعا کنند که چیزی‌که به حیوانات می‌بخشیم از انسان‌ها دریغ می‌کنیم و خزعبلاتی از این‌دست.
