Born in the decline of the last century, in an obscure village in Siberia, Grégoire Rasputin appeared, in his youth, as a semi-illiterate moujik, given to drink and women, but also attracted by the secrets of religion. Endowed with incontestable magnetism, he begins by fascinating and seducing peasant women, then, pushing his advantage, he attacks the venerable representatives of the Orthodox Church who discover in him a living example of simple and healthy popular wisdom and help to break into the best society of St. Petersburg. In a short time, Rasputin gathered around him a court of adoring women. Both inspired and depraved, he was even admitted into the intimacy of the imperial family. The Tsarina, who is neurotic, and whose young son suffers from hemophilia, soon no longer doubts that the prayers of the "holy man" are the only ones capable of saving the heir to the throne and, with him, the entire nation. What could only be a scandal limited to the surroundings of the palace quickly becomes a threat to the entire country. When war broke out in 1914, hatred of the "impostor moujik" gathered around the imperial couple all those who feared seeing a charlatan secretly directing the destiny of the homeland. From plot to plot, the atrocious assassination of Rasputin precipitates the fall of the Empire. Rarely has a man started from so low risen so high, rarely has such a deviation from the faith generated such wide political turmoil, rarely has the mystery of the Russian soul, with its excesses and contradictions, found itself so deeply incarnated in an individual.
