What we shall discuss in this book is fanāʾ (annihilation) and baqāʾ (subsistence) from the perspective of mysticism and Sufism. In fact, fanāʾ and baqāʾ are themselves complex questions, as many inquiries still remain regarding them:

What is their true meaning, and what significance do they hold in the realm of mysticism?

Is the concept of Sufi annihilation derived from the Quran and the Prophetic traditions?

When a person attains annihilation, in what exactly are they annihilated?

The ambiguity deepens when fanāʾ and baqāʾ are interpreted in relation to God: fanāʾ fī Allāh (annihilation in God), annihilation in the path of God, and baqāʾ bi-Allāh (subsistence through God).

Does God truly receive individuals in this state?

Has God indeed willed that the spiritual seeker or mystic should become immersed in Him and attain fanāʾ bi-Allāh?

And if one does not attain annihilation or fail to reach fanāʾ fī Allāh, does that mean the possibility of baqāʾ bi-Allāh must also be disregarded?
