The book Divan of Yaghi’s Ghazals is a work by Dr. Abdolkarim Sohrabi, a contemporary researcher and poet who, in this collection, reanimates the spirit of Persian lyricism through a profound and poetically refined voice. The poems move along the threshold between tradition and innovation, where words come alive in the intensity of love, mysticism, and the poet’s lived experience.

The pen name “Yaghi” (“Rebel”) symbolizes a free-spirited poet liberated from conventional constraints, one who reinterprets the ghazal form anew. In this work, the classical heritage of Persian poetry is interwoven with the language and concerns of modern humanity. Each ghazal becomes a bridge between Hafez and the present, between ancient melodies and the muted cries of our time.

The ghazals were composed during the poet’s years of exile in California, alongside his work as a professor of clinical surgery at California State University (2010–2023). The collection is thus a lyrical account of living at a distance—the distance between homeland and migration, between science and emotion, between the operating room and the solitude of the ghazal.

In this divan, writing under the pen name “Yaghi,” the poet presents himself as a figure of intellectual independence.
